Certain music is terrifically inspirational and it is possible, months or even years afterwards, to look at a painting and remember the music that was playing during its execution. -Robert Glen
In my post, Laguna Canyon Artists – David P. Cooke, I followed the aroma of freshly brewed coffee into David’s open studio door. As I continued to walk around the complex, the sounds of classical music beckoned me into Lorenzo George’s Fine Art studio. Beautiful portraits and paintings surrounded me. I felt like I was in Europe. Not surprisingly, I discovered that Lorenzo is affectionately known as the Contemporary Old Master for his exquisite, old European style classical art.
Lorenzo has had his studio in the Laguna Canyon Artist’s complex since it began renting to artists in 1994. Over the years he has expanded his studio, doubling the size. It is a bright and inviting, multi room space with hardwood floors and overhead skylights.
Lorenzo feels truly blessed to be living and working in this beautiful part of the world. Born in Bucharest, Romania, Lorenzo was interested in drawing and art from a very young age. While at university in Romania, he was classically trained in religious art, learning to paint icons and Christian Saints. He continued to develop his skills in Italy, where he worked on the restoration of murals and frescoes for the Vatican in their cathedrals.
Lorenzo, along with his wife and partner, Rodika, came to the United States in 1986. Finding there was not enough work to keep him busy in the restoration field, Lorenzo moved to Southern California and began painting murals for businesses, restaurants and homes. See the links at the bottom of this post to view his beautiful murals. I was especially taken with the Carved Stone murals. Although Lorenzo still does commission mural work, he is now primarily focusing on portraiture.
Are you a painter? Could you benefit from an intense 3 day Portrait Workshop? Lorenzo will help you study and put into practice academic oil painting techniques using his system. Working from photos, he will lead you through first sketches, proportions, monochromatic under-painting to warming up your portrait and accentuating it with the final highlights. Lorenzo offers these workshops in his spacious studio and limits the class size to just five participants so you will be assured of his full attention. (Sign up information and link below.)
Lorenzo has a back room where he frames his paintings and it also serves as a major storage center. He has vertical canvas storage areas as well as shelves galore. Two large flat file units house paper and paintings.
A small room in the back is used for canvas prep as well as doubling as a tiny kitchen.
As you walk into the studio chances are Rodika George, Lorenzo’s wife, will be there with a friendly greeting. This office is her domaine and she is what every artist needs – a marketing guru, accomplished web master and dedicated partner to handle the business end. Rodika also manages the Laguna Canyon Artists website. For more information please do visit LORENZO’S website. It is a beautiful site, easy to navigate, and you will see amazing paintings. Lorenzo’s murals are featured at CLASSICMURALS.COM. You can sign up for Lorenzo’s Portraiture Workshops here or call 949-376-9493.
